3 Teas to Try This Spring
Say nay to Earl Grey! The world’s most consumed beverage after water is tea, so it should come as no surprise that there are a variety of tea options and certainly a flavor that will make you kick your coffee addiction. (Or at least help to.)
As spring is a time of awakening and cleaning, we are introducing three types of teas that are refreshing and loaded with detoxifying properties.
Green
Green tea is made from unfermented leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It has become increasingly popular over the past few years for its ability to prevent cancer, non-communicable diseases, and aid in weight loss. The powdered version known as Matcha became an Instagram trend for its deep green color, antioxidants, and its magic on the metabolism.
If the earthy taste of green tea isn’t your thing, try a springy flavor such as pomegranate, blueberry acai, or lemon.
Oolong
Oolong, or another name for brown tea, undergoes a similar oxidation process to black tea. Also made from the Camellia sinensis plant, oolong is in between green and black tea on the oxidation scale.
This tea offers the same benefits of green tea and has also been noted to decrease inflammation, prevent bone loss, and reduce the appearance of eczema.
Oolong has a smooth almost floral taste, but it can be too strong for some. We recommend adding honey or trying a flavored oolong such as peach.
Rooibos
Rooibos means “red bush” and is actually considered a tisane. Because it is made from a bush that grows in South Africa and not the Camellia sinensis plant, it doesn’t bear the official “tea” title, but that doesn’t make it any less of a nutrient- or flavor- powerhouse.
Rooibos is caffeine free, contains 50% more antioxidants than green tea, and an aids in digestion. It has a sweet taste and is often flavored with fruits such as mango, caramel, and vanilla.
Whether you’re looking for a sweet tea, and earthy tea, or one to help you get in shape before summer, there are plenty of options beyond the usual Earl Grey.
